Microcurrent Facial Treatments: What's the buzz?

FOREO BEAR microcurrent device sending electrical current deep into the skin layers

Microcurrent facial is an anti-aging treatment so successful it’s been dubbed as the ‘Non-Surgical Face Lift’. Microcurrent has been the talk of the town for a while. And for a good reason! When you hear about a facial treatment that makes you younger instantly, you probably have lots of questions. What is it? How does it work? Is it safe? This natural alternative to botox and fillers will transform your skin and give you a younger-looking, smooth, and lifted face!

What is a microcurrent facial?

In short, a microcurrent facial is an anti-aging miracle skincare treatment. In other words, it's a facial that's focused on your skin and muscles. 43 facial and 26 muscles in your neck naturally lose their tone and firmness through aging. Microcurrent therapy treatment utilizes a low-grade electrical current to "train" all those muscles. It contours, tones, firms and lifts the muscles and the skin. The result is a healthier complexion that makes you look younger.

How does it work?

The microcurrent encourages the production of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) which leads to the creation and stimulation of structural proteins like elastin and collagen. Collagen is the main protein that your body uses to build muscle. Hence why this facial functions as a workout for your face. Furthermore, the non-invasive treatment triggers the body’s natural signals which induce tissue repair. This causes a release of natural skin enhancement chemicals at a cellular level. As a result, damaged skin starts to repair and the production of collagen is stimulated.

Is a microcurrent facial safe?

Don’t worry, it’s painless and safe for most of the population. However, the treatment uses a low-grade electrical current. Therefore people with pacemakers or any kind of heart condition should avoid it. Moreover, pregnant women are advised against it as well. Most importantly, you should always discuss any allergies or skin sensitivities with your doctor or aesthetician before starting any treatments.

Can microcurrent treatment cause cancer?

One of the most common concerns about microcurrent treatment is whether or not it can cause cancer. There is no evidence to suggest that microcurrent treatment increases the risk of cancer.

Microcurrent facial side effects

Microcurrent facial is considered a low-risk treatment, but there are some potential side effects that you should be aware of before starting treatment such as:

 • Redness
 • Swelling
 • Tingling or numbness
 • Pain or discomfort
 • Headache
 • Dizziness

The key benefits of microcurrent treatment

Stimulate collagen and elastin production

Microcurrent treatment works by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. As we age, our bodies produce less and less of these important proteins, leading to wrinkles, sagging skin, and a generally unhealthy appearance. By stimulating collagen and elastin production, microcurrent treatment can help reverse these signs of aging and leave you with firmer, younger-looking skin.

Improve blood circulation

Poor blood circulation is another common contributor to aging skin. Microcurrent treatment can help improve blood circulation, delivering vital nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells and helping to flush out toxins. This can leave your skin looking brighter, healthier, and more youthful.

Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

One of the most immediately noticeable benefits of microcurrent treatment is a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This effect is achieved by increasing collagen and elastin production, as well as improving blood circulation. If you're looking for a non-invasive way to reduce the signs of aging, microcurrent treatment may be right for you.

Tone and tighten sagging skin

Sagging skin is a common problem that can make you look older than you are. Microcurrent treatment can help to tone and tighten sagging skin, giving you a more youthful appearance.

Remove toxins from the skin

Toxins can accumulate in the skin over time, leading to a variety of skin problems. By increasing blood circulation and helping to flush out toxins, microcurrent treatment can help keep your skin looking clear and healthy.

Lift drooping eyebrows

Drooping eyebrows can give you a tired or sad appearance. Microcurrent treatment can help to lift drooping eyebrows, giving you a more youthful and energetic look.

Get rid of dark circles under the eyes

Dark circles under the eyes can make you look exhausted and older than you are. Microcurrent treatment can help reduce the appearance of dark circles by improving blood circulation and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

Plump up thin lips

Thin, wrinkled lips are another common sign of aging. Microcurrent treatment can help to plump up thin lips, giving you a more youthful appearance.

When apoptosis occurs it can cause destruction of fat and therefore lead to volume loss. Is this a risk with home microcurrent devices please? The study seems to suggest it can occur from as little as 0.05mA (they didn't go any lower, so it could potentially occur at even lower amperage). This has me concerned. Has effect on apoptosis been studied in relation to the Bear?
Thanks,
Sarah

Dear Sarah, thank you for sharing your concerns with us! Please note that the BEAR™ has an Anti-Shock System™ that eliminates any chance of the microcurrent shocking your skin, resulting in maximum safety and effectiveness. Please also remember to use it with a water-based serum. This will help the microcurrents to penetrate the epidermis to reach the muscle therefore you should not feel a thing when the treatment is performing. However, it is not recommended that you use oil-based serum, or any creams as a conductor. Oil-based serums and creams will not react well with the device. We hope this helps! Kind regards :)

It would be great to get a real answer to the previous question.

The paper states clearly:
0.2 mA → 200microamp → immediate apoptosis
apoptosis if applied 3 consecutive days even at 0.05mA → 50microamp
To clear clear apoptosis means gone, kaput, cell death, irreversible.
Not responding to clear questions on this is absurd.

Hi there, I would kindly advise you to consult your eye surgery doctor because every case is different and it is hard to generalise for eyes. Thank you and wishing you soon recovery! <3

Hello,
I don't know how old this question is, but I can definitely say though my experience that rosacea should be a counter-indication to microcurrent. Although microcurrent and nanocurrent mimic our bio-electrical exchanges, they are not gentle technologies, they boost ATP levels that can lead to fat apoptosis, collagen destruction and stimulate rosacea (instead of calming it). The levels and use of microcurrent were close to the study that was posted here above, leading to fat aopotosis at the third application of microcurrent.

I used a Ziip device last December (2021) as advised by the company for rosacea (type 3, hyperplasia). The company specifically advised the nanocurrent program "as many times as your wish" and this triggered exacerbated hyperplasia a few days after the second time I used the device as advised, twice in a row. Roughly 10 days later, I woke up to see one cheek depressed and my eye pads melted. A few months later, my eyes had aged a decade (shrunk, round in shape and sunken in) collagen depleted and fat loss extended to my body, triggering Acquired Lipodystophy, possibly an immune réaction to the high levels of ATP. Ziip refunded me but was not helpful: Rosacea is immune related and should appear as a counter indication (as it does appear regularly for radiofrequency).

To this day, a year and a half later, if the sunken cheek has almost repaired, I still have 2 large bumps that stand out on my forehead (where the 2 probes are located on the device) my eyes and orbital fat loss are still as bad. Walking is painful with no padded soles and I will be soon having fat grafts under my feet. I have joined a Facebook group regrouping 6000+ members who have experienced fat loss linked to radiofrequency, laser and other devices. Several members landed in this group as I did, after microcurrent triggered fat loss and collagen depletion.
