You Have Tooth Discoloration? Well, It’s Time to Change Your Everyday Habits
First impressions are everything, right? It is not a secret that people often notice the smile first - and what is a smile without healthy, beautiful white teeth? Around 33% of people said they notice teeth first when meeting new people, and about 25% of them said teeth are the first thing they think of when they remember someone. Also, many people who feel insecure about their teeth because of stains or discoloration, smile less which can have much bigger consequences such as not getting a wanted job, not dating a person they like, etc. So, here’s all you need to know about this unpleasant condition.
No tea, coffee or chocolate?!
Even though many tooth stains are treatable and, most importantly, preventable, they can be such a pain in the… tooth! To properly treat tooth discoloration, first you need to know what type you have (yes, there are types): extrinsic, intrinsic, or age-related. The most common causes of extrinsic stains are things we like most: food, beverages, or tobacco. If you are a big fan of red sauces, red wine, coffee, tea, or chocolate (well, what’s left?!), you’ll probably get some stains on your teeth. Luckily, those stains are easy to treat because all you have to do is eat and drink smarter, which means you need to limit food and drinks that stain your teeth. Also, using a straw and drinking water after eating and drinking that food and drinks will be very helpful, just like brushing and flossing after your meal. To be clear, if your tooth stains are extrinsic, you are lucky! Better oral hygiene and voila - you’ll have your, not a million, but a billion-dollar smile.
When is a time to see a dentist?
If your stains are intrinsic and caused by trauma, medication, tooth decay, injury, or genetics, and none of the whitening products are helping you, it is time to see your dentist. You have to be very careful with it because sometimes tooth discoloration indicates that your tooth nerve is - sorry but - dead. The third type of tooth discoloration is aging. Well, we can’t prevent aging, but we can do our best to age gracefully. Tooth discoloration caused by aging is the reason why your teeth become yellow with years and is happening because the enamel on your teeth begins to wear away.
Meaning of a tooth color
If you wonder which tooth color means what, check below. Yellow teeth - the most common discoloration. It happens because of: tobacco, coffee, tea, red wine, chronic dry mouth, or poor oral hygiene. White teeth - but not in a good way. Namely, sometimes white spots can appear on your teeth because of too much fluoride or even because of a cavity. Brown teeth - often caused by decay. In other cases, you’ll get brown teeth if you eat too much blueberries, blackberries, or if you are dealing with tartar buildup (it is a colored deposit that forms when plaque hardens on your teeth, or simply put a plaque on steroids).
