Can Skincare Affect Overall Well-Being?

There's been a lot of talk of holistic health lately - an approach where physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social needs are interconnected and equally important for overall well-being. Today, we'll talk about the connection between skincare and well-being. Taking care of our skin as one of the steps in our self-care routine benefits our psychological well-being. It's a closed circle: the skin reflects our internal health, and when the skin looks good, we tend to feel better.

Mind, Body and Skin Connection

When we find ourselves in a dangerous situation, our bodies release the hormone called cortisol. Cortisol suppresses the immune system, making it unable to fight inflammation and bacteria effectively. It also increases sweat and oil production, which clogs pores. All of it can cause breakouts, rashes, infections, irritation, and flare-ups of skin diseases such as rosacea. It also reduces collagen and elastin production, causing fine lines and wrinkles.

Skincare and Neurological Well-Being

Our busy schedules and daily lives can get overwhelming, so it is essential to understand what your skin requires and care for it properly. According to a recent study published by the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, individuals who received facial care showed higher levels of satisfaction. The relaxation induced by facial skincare was up to 42% higher than relaxation induced by those in the resting condition. The touching sensations of your daily skincare routine release endorphin, the happiness hormone, and oxytocin - also known as the love hormone. While endorphins help with relaxation and reduce stress, oxytocin promotes emotional well-being and increases our sense of connection.

Confidence

As humans, we all experience imperfections such as acne, redness, or hyperpigmentation, which impacts our self-esteem. Learning to come to peace with our skin problems takes time, and the first step is to recognize that everyone feels this way from time to time. Stress in life can result in the emergence of many skin conditions, however, there are methods, such as self-care rituals and meditation, that can help improve skin issues and restore confidence.

Self Care Rituals

Meditation

Regular meditation reduces stress, which leads to lower cortisol production, a hormone that causes skin problems such as acne, premature aging and dehydration.

Proper skincare routine

Cleansing is an essential element of any skincare practice, and the first step towards healthy, glowing skin. LUNA™ 4 facial brush by FOREO gently removes 99% of dirt, oil and makeup residue while promoting circulation, lymphatic drainage and absorption of active ingredients. You can choose a customized cleanse based on your skin type and problem areas, and its innovative T-sonic™ massage takes care of impurities trapped deep within your pores.

Relax the facial muscles

Facial muscle relaxation is a rejuvenating activity that improves physical appearance and general well-being. With IRIS™ 2 by FOREO, you can now relax, sip your tea, and enjoy a spa-treatment at home. The finger-tapping acupressure motion stimulates lymphatic drainage, reducing the appearance of dark circles and refreshing and depuffing tired eyes. It also helps to relax facial muscle tension produced by eye strain from screens and small text.

Hydration ritual

keeping your skin moisturized at all times can prevent excess sebum production, resulting in a more smooth and radiant complexion. Hyaluronic acid serum, a skincare ingredient that has gained popularity for its extraordinary capacity to offer deep hydration to the skin, can be used on a daily basis to ensure your skin is well-hydrated.

Breathing exercise

Close your eyes and count to four, while you take a calm, deep breath through your nose. Then, exhale slowly through your mouth, releasing any tension. Concentrate solely on the sensation of your breath — how it fills you with energy as you inhale and calms you as you exhale. Repeat several times.
